‘Social Spaces’: The Budget Traveler’s Happy Place

Over at Travel Generation, Bruce Thurlow has put together a list of nine “social spaces”—parks, markets and so on—that he argues are the key to truly appreciating the life of a new city.
I agree: I think I’ve done some of my best people-watching and observation on subway trains, on playing fields or in public squares. And the best part? These spaces are almost always free, or pretty close to it.
Here are a few spots to add to Thurlow’s list:

After reading about the poor standards of pork in Europe (where England gets most of its pork from), pig-eating British journalist Alex Renton became concerned. He puts blame on British supermarkets. He writes in the Guardian: “The fact is that price discounting (you may have noticed we’re in the midst of another ‘value’ war at the moment) has forced the price of pork so low that few farmers can make a profit on a pig, even when produced in a cage on the cheapest feed possible.” The answer, of course, is to stop eating pork, which Renton refused to do. So he took matters into his own hands (or, should I say, taste buds). “My pig is 11 months old now,” he writes admiringly of the piglet he’s now raising for the slaughter.
How About a Cheap Trip to Rome With Those Groceries?

Talk about an impulse buy. British supermarket chain Aldi has announced that its customers will soon be able to purchase discount holiday packages along with their canned goods and fresh produce. Sounds like a dangerous combo: I have a hard enough time resisting the magazines and chocolate bars at check-out, let alone a discount weekend in Rome.
