The movie I believe is the funniest movie ever made and one of the best travel movies ever is now available in the “Don’t Call Me Shirley!” special edition. Unfortunately, according to the Onion A.V. Club’s Scott Tobias, it isn’t so special: “Some of the nuggets are interesting—David Letterman auditioned for the [Robert] Hays role, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (in a role intended for Pete Rose) asked for just enough money to pay for an oriental rug—but it isn’t worth scrolling through the entire film to get to them.”
What about the movie “Airplane!” itself? Tobias writes: “[I]t holds up surprisingly well, even though its 87 minutes of fun aren’t enough to redeem the countless hours of lame comedy that followed in the film’s sizeable wake.”
