Travelodge’s annual “sleepwalker audit” revealed a “seven fold increase in sleepwalking customers” in the last year, and 95 percent of those sleepwalkers were naked men. A Travelodge spokesperson told Reuters that the hotel chain has more male visitors than female “so that could be a factor” in the gender imbalance.

Travelodge “sleep director” Leigh McCarron says Travelodge will now keep towels at the reception desk to cover up stray sleepwalkers, and it will train its staff to help sleepwalkers when a problem, uh, “arises.”

Why the surge? Travelodge asked a sleep expert from the Edinburgh Sleep Center, who said:

These figures are a surprise. Sleepwalking is a serious disorder that can develop for a variety of reasons. It can be triggered by a stressful lifestyle, sleep deprivation, alcohol abuse or not breathing properly during the night.

Another cause cited for sleepwalking: cheese.

If we’ve said it once we’ve said it a million times: When you’re on the road, particularly in Belgium, never underestimate the significance of cheese.
