Photo by Jim Benning. There’s been a lot of coverage about the rise in Chinese tourists. And much of it centers on their bad manners, though the Chinese do have at least one high-profile defender. Now, to help its citizens make a better impression around the world, the Chinese government is producing an etiquette guide for its citizens traveling abroad. Among the tips: don’t spit, don’t litter and don’t speak loudly in public.
From a story in China Daily:
The guidebook will be based on public input currently being gathered through letters and e-mails concerning how travellers should behave.
Zhai Weihua, the committee’s deputy director, said on Friday in Beijing that the campaign had received a “favourable” response, with more than 30,000 letters and emails flooding in listing inappropriate behaviour and offering suggestions for the guidebook.
The campaign is scheduled to last through the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
