It’s Not Easy Going Green, Even in Denver

Denver is, of course, packed this week with Democrats. And since the Mile-High City has cultivated a reputation for eco-consciousness, Democratic National Convention organizers and Democratic leaders are trying hard to green the convention.
They’ve encouraged hotels like the Sheraton to use wooden hotel keys instead of plastic ones, and Denver’s visitors bureau has created a carbon calculator to measure emissions. All the delegations have even purchased carbon offset credits for their travel to Denver as part of a green challenge.
Sound cool? Oh, sure, but the Denver-based magazine 5280 offers a healthy dose of skepticism. For instance, 5280 notes a major offset source for the green challenge was supposed to be a wind farm in the town of Wray. The turbines, however, have yet to start turning. Hmmm.
