I loved setting off with my new pup on our first road trip together. We started out easy—just a weekend trip up the Atlantic coast—but he was such a good travel buddy, I see this as training for future pan-America adventures, a la Steinbeck and Charley.
Here’s a picture of the little guy lounging on the floor under an air conditioning vent. Who would you rather spend thousands of miles in a compact car with?

I caught “The Runaway Jury” on TV earlier this week—it’s been years since I last saw it, and I had completely forgotten that it was set in New Orleans, so it was a pleasant surprise to watch the action play out across the French Quarter, on the St. Charles Avenue streetcar and beyond. Here’s the trailer:

Roadside restaurants whose names are bad puns. Came across this one this morning in Somerset, Pennsylvania.

I’m teaching a class on narrative nonfiction at The Loft in Minneapolis and the travel writing section gave me a chance to review some great stuff. I loved rereading Catherine Watson’s Where the Roads Diverged, Tom Bissell’s War Wounds, David Farley’s The Pasta Nazi and, of course, David Foster Wallace’s Shipping Out.

I loved travel-inspired artwork on utility boxes near city streets. I took this shot in San Diego’s Hillcrest neighborhood.
