A friend and I hiked through Eldorado Canyon State Park, passing golden cliffs, the rapids of South Boulder Creek and the ruins of the once-grand Crags Hotel. But my favorite moment was sitting on the rocks and taking in this view of the Continental Divide from a rocky perch on the Rattlesnake Gulch trail (where, thankfully, we saw no actual rattlesnakes.)

Green mango salad. I had a spicy, delicious plateful last night, courtesy of a Thai expat here in Barbados—made from mangoes off the tree in my dad’s front yard. After dinner, I headed out to a bar to drink the local island-brewed beer and watch an NHL hockey game via satellite. Talk about a shrinking planet.

Jack Kerouac, fantasy baseball obsessive. The New York Times has a great story—and terrific images—about the “On the Road” author’s little-known hobby.

As an occasional lucha libre fan, I found this New York Times story fascinating.

I loved seeing World Hum writers David Farley, Robert Reid, Abbie Kozolchyk and other great travelers and writers at the most recent Restless Legs reading at the Lolita Bar in Manhattan.

Discovering Isla de Margarita, Venezuela. The Caribbean island is less than an hour flying time east of Caracas. European and Russian tourists and the international wind surfing and kite surfing crowds have found the island, but tend to stick to a few towns. Americans? Noticeably absent everywhere. Reggaeton and rumba under swaying palms, fresh snapper dinners on the beach and quiet bays with precious few sun-seekers. I’m tempted to call it the Caribbean’s best kept secret.
