The searchable Harper’s Index. The magazine has been delivering pithy factual tidbits since 1984, and now you can search through all of them online by topic. Here are the 90 matches in my search for items about travel. One of my favorites comes from 1990: “Amount the U.S. Air Force spent this year to study the effects of jet noise on pregnant horses: $100,000.”

I’ve always wanted to host my own YouTube cooking show, because doesn’t the whole world really want to see me make my secret baklava recipe to the beat of “Chains of Love” by Erasure? But I doubt my show would ever be as awesome as the sensational “Cooking With Clara,” which features Great Depression-era recipes by 93-year-old Sicilian-American Clara Cannucciari.

I loved this article, which describes a sound I’ve kind of heard on the New York City subway before, but had never clearly noticed or appreciated until I read this piece. The story has audio, too.

I loved the movement on easing restrictions on travel to Cuba for Cuban-Americans with family members still in the country. Now I just wish Congress would open up Cuba travel to all Americans.

I took a culinary walking tour of Greenwich Village earlier this week, and got a small taste of the wares at half a dozen Village restaurants and specialty shops. It’s hard to choose just one, but I think my favorite sample was the melting, fresh-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookie at Milk and Cookies. Best cookie I’ve ever had? It’s up there.

Garden and Cosmos: The Royal Paintings of Jodhpur—Monkeys in shorts, tiny walled palaces bursting with greenery, great clouds of women in saris, none of the patterns the same. This spectacular collection of Indian paintings left me feeling like I’d spent the afternoon walking around in a tiny, magical fairy tale.

Getting a food tour of Jackson Heights, New York, with World Hum blogger, Jenna Schnuer. We ate our way through spicy Indian dishes, tacos al pastor from a truck outside the 74th/Broadway subway stop, Nepalese dumplings called momos and a sweet bun from a Mexican bakery. I know we only touched (tasted?) the tip of the iceberg, and I can’t wait for a Part Deux.
