What We Loved This Week: Porter Airlines, Dave Eggers and More

I loved flying Porter Airlines and, before take-off, relaxing in Porter’s free passenger lounge at Toronto City Centre Airport. A smooth operation, friendly staff, and free snacks—it was a pleasant reminder that air travel doesn’t have to be a succession of minor inconveniences and discomforts.

I’ve been enjoying Dave Eggers’s latest non-fiction book, Zeitoun, about an immigrant’s experience in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. It’s not exactly travel writing, but it captures a sense of place in a powerful way, and it’s a great, if troubling, read.

Though I cringe as I admit it, I have joined the cult of the iPhone and fallen in love with its crappy but playful camera. Damned thing has turned every errand run into a trip. I don’t just pile on through my neighborhood, Jackson Heights. I snap it. As photographer Chase Jarvis says, “the best camera is the one that’s with you.”
