Since seeing Youssou N’Dour with his band at the “Muslim Voices: Arts & Ideas” celebration last month, I’ve been unable to stop listening to West African music. Currently in heavy rotation on my iPod: the austere yet entrancing guitar tones of the Touareg collective Tinariwen.

I have family in town for the Fourth, and I loved playing tour guide and trying to come up with unexpected but family-friendly ways to show them around D.C. Well, not really. But I was actually pretty impressed by the creative new approach I found at the Spy Museum.

Though I live in a coffee junkie city, I can’t find my favorite preparation at any cafe. So a few a weeks ago I bought a proper cezve, a Turkish coffee pot. This week I finally learned its quirks. Now I’m in foamy, sweet, strong, muddy-bottomed heaven.

Amid the all-Michael Jackson, all-the-time coverage this week, one song stood out. A Facebook friend posted a video of “Goin’ Places,” a song by The Jacksons that I can’t believe I’d never heard. I also can’t believe this didn’t get at least one vote in our countdown of the best travel songs of all time. Anyway, I love it now.

I loved road-tripping from Whitehorse, Yukon, to Skagway, Alaska, for the weekend. The drive is only about 100 miles, but I spent half the day getting there because I pulled over so often to take pictures. Here’s a shot I took at Emerald Lake:

I’m loving this Mike Scott tribute to pro-democracy demonstrators in Iran (words by W.B. Yeats), which I wrote about earlier this week. It’s in heavy rotation on my computer.
