The Society of American Travel Writers announced the winners of the 2006 Lowell Thomas Awards today at its convention in Santiago, Chile. In the Internet publication category, which happens to be our favorite, we’re delighted to report that World Hum took top honors, winning the gold award. Lonely Planet took the silver and NewYorkology took the bronze.

The judges wrote that World Hum “gathers engaging narratives, informative how-to articles, interviews, columns and blog entries into a user-friendly, easy-to-navigate site. Blog entries cover not only the usual tourist destinations but also places like Botswana, Afghanistan and, under the category of Space Tourism, low-Earth orbit.”

Among other winners, World Hum contributor Rolf Potts was awarded the gold for the best article on maritime travel, for his Outside Traveler story “Cycladian Rhythm.”
