The Sun reports that Santa Claus lookalike David Powney had his passport application rejected because of his bushy white beard.

David, who has sported his beard for 34 years, said yesterday: “It’s the essence of my identity and is how people recognise me. I’ve never had problems before.”

David, of Treherbert, South Wales, also earns a living as a lookalike of Buster Merryfield from TV’s Only Fools And Horses.

He said of the beard ban: “It’s discrimination against Santa Claus.”

The pensioner, who is currently working at a store grotto in Croydon, South London, had been planning a post-Christmas holiday. He said: “It’s touch and go whether I’ll get my new passport in time.”
