Phil Cousineau was startled when, as a young traveler embarking on a trip to Egypt, a friend described his journey as a “pilgrimage.” The more he thought about it, however, the more the description rang true. “By naming my journey a pilgrimage, he had conferred a kind of dignity on it that altered the way I have traveled ever since,” Cousineau writes in The Art of Pilgrimage: The Seeker’s Guide to Making Travel Sacred. Cousineau’s fondness for travel, and his appreciation of its transformative powers, shine through on every page, making the book a worthy addition to any travel library. “What matters most on your journey,” Cousineau writes, “is how deeply you see, how attentively you hear, how richly the encounters are felt in your heart and soul.”
