Worldometers: A Real-Time Look at the What’s Going on in the World

It’s impossible to watch the numbers spin at Worldometers without getting a concrete sense of just how fast the world is changing. The site features real-time counters for dozens of world stats, including the size of the world’s population; how many cars have been produced, books published and computers sold this year; and the fast-rising price of a bottle of beer in Zimbabwe—almost Z$4 million. It’s all terrifying and mesmerizing.

This really is fascinating, I had to pull my eyes away from the counters. It’s really scary how much topsoil is lost from farmland each second, several tons while I watched. Also how much pollutants we as a world put out…

It sure is mesmerizing. Every half a second a child is born, and every second, someone loses their life.

Hi Frank:

I still haven’t checked the Worldometers website yet, but I can tell I will shift into high gear tonight and stare in goggle-eyed fascination, grimacing with blue teeth, colored by an inexpensive Beaujolais, at the audacity of such a vision.

Checking stats, facts, and figures is about as addictive as a good foie gras—and to be digested in moderation, with a healthy eye for fudge quotient and flawed canvassing.

It does sound like a good reference spot, to glean a surprising arch eyebrow raiser, and tart up an argument.
