Are Cheap Airline Flights a Blessing or a Horror? Or Both?
Gregory M. Lamb writes:
The result of fewer flights could be a dramatic rise in the price of air travel. In Britain, in fact, “the government has just upped a tax on airline flights from £10 to £40 ($19 to $76), depending on the length of the flight, in the name of reducing air travel and CO2 emissions,” Lamb writes. What might things look like in 30 years? Writes Lamb: “People may look back at the early 21st century with both fondness and horror as the Era of the Cheap Airline Flight.”

COMMENTSSomething everyone can do in the short term to offset some of the environmental impact of your travels by purchasing carbon offsets for each leg of your trip through programs like Go Zero. By Rachel on 2.12.07 at 03:40 PM
The carbon offset programs that plant trees sound good and make you feel better, but they really don’t do anything to stop global warming. They only work as long as the trees are growing. Once they start to decay and die, all that carbon is released right back into the atmosphere. So basically it accomplishes nothing, or perhaps worse than nothing, because it enabled you to jet off somewhere with a non-guilty conscience. What irks me are all these “green” celebs lecturing us as they zip around in their private jets, which belch more CO2 in an hour than an SUV contributes in a year. I agree - taxes are going up and up all the time. The prices is also directly correlated with fuel cost - which regularly goes up. By MIG Travel man on 2.14.07 at 05:11 AM
