Maui Locals to MTV: We’re Not All White Deviants Who Prey on TouristsSome Maui locals are none too happy about MTV’s new reality show, “Maui Fever.” Why? Oh, let us count the ways. For starters, reports the AP, “The first episode highlights a group of men who target tourists for fast, easy, and noncommittal hookups. Previews for the eight-episode series — which airs on MTV Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. — hint at cheating, fighting, partying and hooking up.” One Kihei mom told The Maui News: “I couldn’t even stomach the first few minutes. I thought I would give it a chance. I thought it would portray our island in a beautiful way. It’s just horrible for Maui – it’s embarrassing.” Categories: Weblog • Hawaii • Media Addict
COMMENTSI watched this show with my 14 year old daughter and she did not like the show at all. She said it portrayed these young girls as whores and dimwits and the boys weren’t any better. I think that the cast should be kids that have grown up on the island and not a bunch of kids that just moved there. This show should be pulled off the air and the people of Hawaii should be extremely offended by how the kids are portrayed. I have been to Hawaii and we didn’t stick to the tourist areas. I have to say every young person we met was very polite and pleasant and very helpful. At one point when we were on Oahu we were really lost and a bunch of kids helped us find our way back to the main road. These kids on this show are not native Hawaiins and should not be cast as if they are. They give the kids of this beautiful and great state a bad name. And the parents of these kids should be embarrassed by the behaviour of their children. By on 1.24.07 at 09:35 AM
I watched this show with my husband and he couldn’t even watch it himself. He said it made him as a local boy shame… All the members on this show is all caucasion. What happen to all the local brada’s? I really don’t care if you lived here for so many years if you wasn’t born here than your not local. MTV should have used the real local kids and if they never like do what MTV was asking maybe its because that’s just not how our local boys are. But I guess MTV never understand that when the locals was saying no to there STUPID show Maui Fever. By on 1.25.07 at 11:31 PM
