I somehow wound up with a CD by folk singer Tendor Logchopa, who I’d never heard of before but who is active in fighting for the Tibet cause. Song titles include “Prisoner of the Himalayas” and “Sweet Suffering.” It’s not every day you hear a Tibetan folkie. I don’t know much about him—there’s not much to be learned online—but given the recent protests in Tibet and the ongoing torch controversy, he seems destined to be a hit on the coffee house circuit:

My favorite place in Edinburgh is the Scottish Storytelling Centre, which celebrates Scotland’s tradition of live oral storytelling and also showcases traditional folk music. Those performing have so much fun and put so much heart into what they do that those watching (like me) are swept into the art. I really got into the Ceilidh Concert at the center last Saturday. The lineup included a collection of local singers and musicians, and a young duo of jaw-dropping talent—Jeana Leslie and Siobhan Miller, the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award winners.

I can’t say surfing’s been a life-long dream, but—cliche or not—I have been wanting to try it ever since I saw surfer-movie/romantic-comedy hybrid Blue Crush in my first year of college. This week in Barbados, I finally got the chance to channel my inner surfer girl. I came away with a few bruises and a spectacular sunburn, and I’ll be back for more next week.
