Baggage: Check It or Ship It?

Most folks have thought about shipping extra baggage home by mail at one time or another—especially when the souvenir shopping gets out of hand. Now that free checked baggage is going the way of the dodo (or should I say, the way of in-flight meals, movies and complimentary beverage service?) the postal alternative is likely to become ever more popular. Wired blogger Dave Demerjian breaks down the numbers on both options.

When my boyfriend and I went to San Diego we opted on shipping some extra baggage home. Our flight out costed us over $60 extra dollars because my suitcase, which I had measured before we left, was two inches over limit and over the weight limit too. The extra two inches came from the fact my luggage was bulging. We saved almost $50 shipping it home instead of checking it. It’s definately the way to go these days.

I used to chek my extra baggages home, and I think it is ok. However, if the free checked baggage is going the way of the dodo, I will not refuse to have a try now that the postal alternative is likely to become ever more popular.
