New Orleans Keeps An Anxious Eye on Hurricane Gustav

Although the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina falls tomorrow, residents of New Orleans have another major storm on their minds. Hurricane Gustav, currently hovering around Cuba, is expected to pick up speed over the Gulf and could arrive in southern Louisiana and Mississippi by late Sunday or early Monday.
The New York Times outlines the preparations being made to ensure that there’s no repeat of 2005’s tragedy if Gustav does come to town.
I arrived back in New Orleans on Monday, and everywhere I go, I hear people talking about the storm. Some intend to ride it out; others are taking no chances, and are already making plans to reach higher ground. There’s no doubt that the Katrina anniversary is adding to the tension.
“If another storm hits on the same weekend as Katrina,” said one local I spoke to yesterday, “I might start taking those street preachers seriously when they say New Orleans is being punished for its sins.”
