Terror and Travel in Morocco

Terry Ward had just arrived in Morocco for a six-week Arabic course when she heard about the previous night’s terrorist bombings in Casablanca, 230 miles away. “Four explosions in Casa. Suicide bombers,” the receptionist at her Tangier hotel told her. “Many, many people dead.” Ward spent the coming days trying to make sense of the attack and how it might affect her stay in the country, which she chose to visit because she thought it would be safe. Her evocative account appears in Sunday’s South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

I just got back from my 10th trip to Morocco. The first was in 1969. Of course terrorism can happen anywhere; anti-social elements with grievances, which in their minds excuse senseless violence, can happen in any country. Religionist fanatics, be they Christian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu all have in common the primitive notion that “God” is on their side and that therefor any heinous act is forgiven in the perceived serving of that “God.” I’m happy to say, on the other hand, that the vibe in the Moroccan cities I visited this time—Tangier, Fes, Marrakech and Essaouira—was really excellent, the best ever. I’ve been writing about it at the Around The World Blog, but, in brief, I see tremendous changes in Morocco. There’s a momentous growth of an indigenous middle class and the country appeared a lot more prosperous than I ever saw it before. Marrakech was stunningly cosmopolitan and even dark, medieval Fes is free of obnoxious “guides” and actually has posted signs throughout the medina, identifying routes and sites! It isn’t Disneyland yet, but it isn’t Afghanistan either. It’s well worth the visit.
