Tom Haines Goes to Mexico
Travel Blog • Jim Benning • 12.12.05 | 5:44 PM ET
The Boston Globe published the first installment yesterday of a two-part series about Mexico by Tom Haines. He covers a lot of ground and writes evocatively of the uneasy relationship between Mexico and the United States.
One country was born from England, the other from Spain. Each brutalized its indigenous people. The United States isolated those who remained; Mexico included them, if barely. A war ended in 1848 with a new border, one of the longest in the world.
Markets opened. Dollars go south. Millions of Mexicans come north to work and live. They make up roughly one-third of all immigrants to the United States. A new culture digs deeper in Los Angeles and San Antonio, but also in Seattle and Des Moines. In East Boston, they hail from Jalisco. In New Hampshire, from Zacatecas.
Our future, however distant, is one.
Haines was recently named the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalist of the Year by the Society of American Travel Writers. He’s one of the few—if not the only—travel writers with a newspaper Web page showcasing his work.

I don’t see why our government is so concerned solely with mexican immigration. If its only “roughly 1/3” percent; then why don’t they also concern themselves with other borders. I know a major problem at the mexico-u.s. border is drug trafficking but these problems occurr with other “people” migrating here from other countries just as much as they do down south!!!!!!!
P.S. I don’t see any mexicans blowing up any of our people or buildings!!!!!!!!!

I obey the Mexican immigration laws, or I would be fined and put in prison. i do understand the poverty in Mexico and as long as greedy companies want to hire them at cheaper salaries, and they want to come, that is OK with me. I only ask that, ike I learned to speak Spanish, that you learn and speak English here. I speak Spanish in Mexico and English is the language here. No excuses…I wish I did not have to obey Mexican immigration laws.

Gees, people always travel from point A to point B in order to seek out a better way of life: enough food for their families, job opportunities, education for their children, decent shelter, justice, etc. If American corporations/businesses would pay a living wage in Mexico with benefits while providing money for local resources, and for the repair of the environment partially destroyed by corporations, starving people would not have to risk their lives to come to the US!

i agree. isnt america supposed to be the land of opportunity? whats happened. apparently bush is too busy running this country into the ground and starting trouble where there should be none to be able to solve these isues fairly and efficiently!!!!

Mexico is winning this battle. They can send their poor here to be educated in their own classrooms, with Spanish speaking teachers from all over the world. How do you learn English in a classroom of all Spanish speakers, including the teachers? They do not interact with English speakers, and thy have told me that Spanish will be the official language of the United States. We pay for their education, medical care, rent and we feed them. Mexico would never do that for any of us! They send billions of dollars back to Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries. I was told that I was hated because I said this was wrong and they need to be in a classroom with native Spanish speakers and they need to learn English. I have no problem with Spanish classes for evertone, but I do have a problem with subjects taught in Spanish here in America.
I speak Spanish as a second language and I learned by interacting with the people in Mexico, Spain and Puerto Rico. I am not against anyone being taught in his/her native tongue, but do it in Mexico etc.
I know one teacher who had a classroom with student who spoke about twenty different languages, and she spoke only English. At the end of the semester everyone in that class spoke English! It did not take six years of study in their native language!
I know students from Mexico who will not stand for the Pledge, and they are backed up by the principal who is of Spanish orgin. They can take our tax dollars and wil not respect our flag. They told me that their allegiance is to Mexico! How come Mexico is not feeding or educating them?
People would not come here, if it was not for the jobs.Mexican friends of mine told me that they had to work nights in a factory here in America, when they were 10 and 12 years old! They went to school in the day. They lived twenty to a room. I saw this crowed situation also, so they can send money to family in Mexico. This is a cat and mouse game. America could use thse Mexicans to join others in Iraq. I bet if they were told they are going to be shipped to Iraq, they would not be coming here. Mexico enforces her immigration laws and most intelligent countris do. I feel like I like in India whenever I buy gas? WHY? How can all these poor foreigners from all over the world own businesses that Americans cannot? Personally, I feel they are recruited to come here to work cheaply and put Americans on the unemployment lines. I will shut down AOL and everything, if I do not see an improvement in the lives of Americans.Life is too expensive here for the incomes. No justice/No peace.

WE mexican immigrants work our asses off, taking jobs that you white people think you’re too good for. If all these unemployed americans would get off their asses and take these jobs, there would be no reason for us mexicans to be here!!!!
There are over 17000 illegal immigrants serving the american military, most probably are in iraq right now. Now,how many americans do we see going to mexico, being unfairly underpaid, serving our military, protecting our country??? i mean these immigrants are , rght now, fighting for a country that doesn’t even want them here. they’re risking their lives for your family just the same as their fellow white soldiers. i think if we can do all that , then we deseve a little more respect than we get. You white people act as if youre scared of something????

Judi, if you speak Spanish as a second language then surely you would understand how difficult it is to learn another language. This is especially true when you are working in the fields for many hours per day doing back breaking labor and then going home and having to do more work. Again it is especially true when you are not fortunate enough to receive a fine education in your country of origin. We people in the United States in general know one language: English. The Europeans know many and make up for our ignorance when we travel there. We here are too busy waving red, white and blue cloths and consequently do not have the time or inclination to take out a book and study or get to know a Spanish speaker so that we might enlighten ourselves. Jessica, I agree with you except I hate it when you say “you white people.” Ignorance, bigotry and hatred comes in all colors and from all nations. Not all “white” people feel like Judi, thankfully. Some of us appreciate having a society where people of all races and nationalities and religions are welcome.

Never assume the nationality of anyone here. OK? I worked two jobs and saved my money to take a bus to Mexico alone at age 20. I had no Mexcan friends, but once I crossed the borden, I had tons of families, who adopted me and we practiced Spanish and I helped them with English.I helped many of these families and we are still friends over 40 years later. I really wished I could have had Mexican friends her, but it was not to be.
I am not lazy and I have worked all my life. My free time was not spent in bars or playing games, or watching soap operas. I had a book open, that I could get free from the library. I was a foster child, so life was not easy, but I made it and I am giving back every day of my life. I ent to Mexico alone because I did not want an English speaker to be bored by all the fun I had learning and using ONLY SPANISH, and it was NOT difficult at all.

Obviously you are an intelligent, educated, hard-working, helpful person as well as a fine citizen. You display so many qualities that America (US) holds dear: you seem to be fiercly independent, adventurous, goal oriented, and compassionate (with your friends). Why then are you so darn angry?! Do you think that every person in this universe should be exactly like you? Do you think that every person can be exactly as capable as yourself—no matter what the circumstances of his or her life? Do you think that your experiences qualify you to understand what others have gone through? It’s like “I did XYZ (you stick your chest out)and if you do not do what I believe you should do, you are s..t.
Mexican Americans, Mexican immigrants, Mexican illegals are human beings and as such, they bleed. They have children. They get hungry. They sure get there feelings hurt too. They are hurt by their history as well as you seem to be hurt by yours. Give people a break and by the way—-chill.

thank you maryann, my thoughts exactly, just put into better words!!! i shouldnt have used the term “white people”. as a matter of fact i am half white and also an american citizen. it just aggravates me when one person acts as if they are better than another(irregardless of race, religion, sex or age)
life is what you make it.
Apparently judi has made the most of hers and done well with what life has handed her. however not all people have all the resources and help we have here in america. we are here just trying to make it for ourselves and for our families. we are just trying to survive and why noone is willing to lend a helping hand, i dont know?
as i recall when all this stuff started with iraq, didnt mexico offer to help in any way possible?
i was at work today, by the way i am a 17 year old working to pay for college. i was at work and an older gentleman, picks me out of four other people standing at the counter, and points out the fact that his hat says ” stop the invasion at our border” . then he tells me not to pay any mind to what his hat says, but that what it says is true and we do need to secure our borders because all we’re doing is letting bad people in and asking for trouble!!!!
i was appalled, a little shocked, and a little hurt, but i let it go and told him not to worry about it because i hadnt noticed his hat! Except he didnt let it go at that, he decided to lighten it up a little bit and says to me, ” i personallly couldnt go a day without ya’lls mexican food and women!!!!” Oh but dont be offended!!!!!!!!
i smiled and told him to have a great day!
maybe i’m just young and naive but i am shocked by some of the things that have been said since this whole immigration issue has come up. I’ve never really been exposed to racism. I was always raised to except someone for who they are on the inside, not for where they come from or their skin color.
Maryann 07.09.06 | 11:09 AM ET
Jessica, I can’t believe that you are 17! You are already such a thinker as well as being someone with a heart. If only US would make it easier for you to get a higher education. But think of it, what does Bush (and neocons) need an educated society for? Wouldn’t that be contrary to the plan?
What you went through at the restaurant makes my blood boil. You as a working person had to take that abuse. And yet so many have to be confronted with that stuff day after day. Sure there are issues with immigration. But for many, this whole thing allows certain people to vent their venom motivated by their personal prejudices regardless of the real issues. I guess that I am as naive as a 17 year old in some ways.(Damn, I’ve reached 65 and am shocked by that. But obviously I have learned that life is short and why spend it denegrating people just because they have a different skin color or culture.) I believe that world governments must cooperate for the good of all and in this day of instant communication, it makes no sense to chalk off pieces of the earth and believe that people on the other side of the chalk line are not “us.”
Amazing what is going on in Mexico today—shades of voting “irregularities.” Wonder how much influence US has had, or need I wonder?
I am a mom too, and it must be so sad for your parents when they have raised you to be a humanitarian to know that jerks like that in the restaurant would be spraying on their precious daughter. But you can help us, you are the wave of the future.
