Where in the World Are You, Kelsey Timmerman?

imageToday, we debut “Where in the World Are You?”—a nearly up-to-the-minute interview with a traveler somewhere in the world. Our first traveler is a writer, Kelsey Timmerman, whose response landed in our inbox this morning.

World Hum: Where in the world are you?

Guangzhou, China.

What are you doing there?

I’m on a global quest to answer the question Where Am I Wearing? My flip-flops were made here and I intend to meet the people who made them. I’ve already been to Honduras (shirt), Bangladesh (Christmas boxers) and Cambodia (all-American blue jeans) as part of the quest.

What do you see around you?

From my hotel—the Guangzhou skyline, a little industrial haze, and a full moon. Across the street is the “Metropolis Shoes City” a market with thousands of shoe vendors.

Got a pic?

What did you have for dinner last night, and where?

I had rice (no surprise), unidentifiable meat (which was a surprise), some green beans and some other kind of veggies. I grabbed all of this for less than $1 at a busy hole-in-the-wall diner. I chose it because there were a lot of people there and I could point to the food that I wanted.

What music are you listening to these days?

Johnny Cash, “Unchained.” Weird, huh? I’m diggin’ the contrast. It’s kind of like a lullaby playing during a war scene in a movie.

What are you reading?

The World is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman.

What did you experience in the last 24 hours that you’d recommend?

Strolling. Leave the camera, forget your agenda, and just walk, smell and listen. I just arrived in Guangzhou today and there is nothing quite like that first stroll in a strange city.

Where in the world are you headed next?

Home to Ohio. I’m getting married in September. If I’m not home, I’ll be in a lot of trouble with a lot of people.

I’m a big fan of Where Am I Wearing? Good choice for the beginning of what should be an interesting segment. Can’t wait to see who’s next!

Kelsey pays us to be his e-groupies, but I’d look at that pic of Guangzhou for free.

Where Am I Wearing is a great site.  I check it everyday.  I have enjoyed folowing Kelsey’s quest to discover the birth places of his favorite clothes.  Happy hunting, Kels.
