World Hum: Where in the world are you?

Flughafen Frankfurt am Main, also known as Frankfurt International Airport.

What are you doing there?

I’m waiting for my flight home after three months living in Biarritz, France.

What do you see around you?

There’s a fellow Yank chatting on a cell phone next to me at the café bar in the middle of Terminal 1, an Indian woman in a colorful orange sari who looks to be on the tail-end of a long layover and a swarm of German waiters clad in tidy red uniforms manning the bar. I hear Arabic and French from the tables behind me, too.

What did you have for dinner last night, and where?

I had traveled to Paris by train to catch the overnight train to Frankfurt. Among the only places open at the Gare de l’Est was a small stand serving tired tuna sandwiches on baguette rolls with my beverage of choice for the royal fleecing of 6.40 euros. It was disappointing, considering I was in Paris.

What music are you listening to these days?

I busted out Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” on the train ride to Paris yesterday to soothe my nerves. But in general, it’s been an indie/emo mix that a friend put on my iPod—My Morning Jacket, Nightmare of You and some Japanese emo artist with a voice like spun silk.

What are you reading?

To practice my French, I picked up a book at the train station called Où est tu? ("Where Are You?") by French author Marc Levy. Even if the story is no good, I figure I’ll at least be learning something.

What did you experience in the last 24 hours that you’d recommend?

Sleeping in a couchette on a French train. The pillows are big fluffy down clouds, and the rocking sensation of the train zonks you out like Tylenol PM. Also, raw oysters for breakfast, which I had at the local Biarritz market on my last morning in France.

Where in the world are you headed next?

Back to Orlando for a while to catch up with family and friends. I’m trying to encourage myself that Orlando’s really not so bad. In the past 24 hours, two French people to whom I mentioned I was heading home to O-town responded with a longing look while murmuring, “ça fait rever!” which basically means, “It makes me dream.”
