It also beats “staying with crazy fans”—and, of course, paying for a motel room every night. So says Spin Magazine in a brief story on the latest CouchSurfing phenomenon: touring bands using the popular nonprofit travel site to line up post-gig digs.
According to Spin, more than 900 bands have joined the site. “We’ve never had any bad couchsurfing.com stays,” said the lead singer of The Shackeltons. “Everyone was so welcoming, and their places were nice and clean.”

The story of CouchSurfing, the fast-growing site that connects travelers with fellow travelers and their couches, begins with founder Casey Fenton. Peter Alsop tracked down Fenton and several CouchSurfing devotees, aka the Collective, in Montreal and profiled them in an intriguing story for Good Magazine. Fenton, it turns out, has a motive beyond bringing travelers together. “His mission,” Alsop writes, “is to transform people’s lives.”

Is CouchSurfing wiped out? The popular Web site that connects travelers with fellow travelers and places to sleep around the world suffered a huge data loss in recent days, erasing profiles, e-mails, photos and other information central to the site’s mission. It may have also turned some CouchSurfers into “refugees.” The damage to the community has been “massive,” according to a message Sebastien, one of the site’s co-founders, posted on a message board that’s currently taking the place of the once-vibrant site.
