‘Tis the season for budget travel tips. With the recession well and truly upon us, it seems everyone in the travel industry is looking for a money-saving angle. At About.com, Mark Kahler offers a list of helpful budget travel resolutions to kick off the New Year. My favorite is No. 5—“I will visit a National Park”—but all are practical.

All good resolutions. Too bad vacation swaps are great only if you happen to live somewhere people want to visit. I’ve looked for swaps but it appears nobody wants to vacation in Dallas. Go figger.

I have the same problem in Ottawa, Sophie! (That, and I’m presently without a home TO swap. Ha.)
For what it’s worth, if I ever pass near Dallas I’d like to stop in for a Stars game. And maybe a small-scale re-enactment of the “Who shot JR/It was all a dream” sequence? Are there “Dallas” tours of Dallas?

There are no Dallas tours of Dallas that I know of—although there used to be JFK tours. (Not sure if there are anymore, I’m embarrassed to say.) You can visit Southfork, though. And I can take you to see the skyline as it appeared in the show’s intro, although it’s grown a lot since the 1980s. That big ball atop of Reunion Tower contains a revolving restaurant is scheduled to reopen this month as Wolfgang Puck’s latest venture, called Five-Sixty, for the height of the tower.
Did you hear about the recent Dallas reunion debacle? (You can read bout it here and <a href=“http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/localnews/stories/111808dnmetsouthfork.1c17d81b6.html”>here<a>) Oopsy doodle.
There’s been talk for years of making a movie of the show ... dunno whatever happened to that.
Stop by any time during the season for that Stars game!
Are you living in your car?

oops, sorry about the bad coding. please feel free to repair. I missed a backslash.

Oh man, a Dallas movie would be awesome! (In a bad-good way, probably.) “Who Shot J.R.?” is one of my earliest pop culture memories.
“Are you living in your car?”
Ha, not quite. Bouncing between a series of house-sits, generous friends and relations, sublets. I’ll hope to pass through sometime and take you up on the Stars game! I’m a big Modano fan.

Is it true that visiting Europe is cheaper if you take a cruise because you are paying for all of your meals and accommodations in advance in dollars? Still get to see many ports of call throughout Europe but don’t have to pay higher Euro prices?

We had a great budget vacation by going to visit a nearby city we could drive to…I think the popular word is “staycation” ? Anyhow, we drove to Oklahoma City and found this great military museum called the 45th Infantry Museum. They were the unit that did the final push into Hitler’s bunker, so some really thought provoking exhibits. And, on the lighter side, lots of tanks, trucks, and planes for the kids to look at. The down economy was a good chance to see what sort of interesting places there were to go within a day’s drive.

By the way if you are aware of the environment and apparently there is a high speed train you can take instead of flying and you can actually save money and time that way you may just do that. Momondo now searches trains in Europe as well, allowing you to compare it to flights on the same routes.
