‘7 Tourist Traps You Love’? Um, Not so Much.

imageAmong the places making the list of tourist traps that Budget Travel readers “loved anyway”: Mardi Gras World museum in New Orleans, Hoover Dam on the Nevada-Arizona border (pictured) and Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Wrote one reader: “Pigeon Forge ... is absolute fun and enjoyment.” I passed through Pigeon Forge once en route to the Great Smoky Mountains. It is—how do I put this delicately?—hell on Earth. To fully experience the place, I highly recommend “lunch” at Duff’s Smorgasbord.

Hah.  Kudos.  I would add that Pigeon Forge is also the “absolute” best place I can think of to stock up on stylish cement geese to go in your front lawn next to the gazing ball, American flags, trash, and screaming kids!

I’m all about Wall Drug and the jackalope.

Pigeon Forge is the obnoxious, attention seeking, little sister to the older, but still bratty, Gatlinburg.  The favorite son is the Smokies themselves.  It’s like going to a birthday party for your best friend and you know his annoying siblings are going to be there, yet you go anyway because he’s your friend and it’s worth putting up with his snot nosed sisters just to see him.
