‘Australia’: The Next Big Travel Movie?

imageI caught the trailer for Baz Luhrman’s upcoming, travel-flavored epic in theaters this weekend, and it looks set to follow the likes of Into the Wild and Lord of the Rings as the next big-screen tourist-bait. (It also looks suspiciously like an Australian remake of Out of Africa, but that’s beside the point.)

The movie is angling to be a major holiday hit next month, and probably to scoop some award nominations, too; if that happens, don’t be surprised to see Western Australia and the Northern Territory popping up on a lot of travel wish lists. The Guardian has already run the first travel story I’ve seen on the flick—and I very much doubt it’ll be the last. Check out the trailer below.

This can only be a good thing for Australian tourism. There hasnt been much of a draw for quite some time, aparently things feel a bit short of expectations after the Sydney olympics. Something like this is exactly what our industry needed, and at a really great time. Not to mention, the australian dollar is worth 60 cents to the american, so come one, come all!

Oh boy. I love Oz, but I’d rather be force-fed vegemite-slathered-sardines than have to sit through this one.
