Blow Baby Blow: Volcano Watch 2009

Photo Courtesy of Alaska Travel Industry AssociationSome Alaska residents might want to consider investing in an umbrella hat. With Mount Redoubt set to blow in a minute? next week?, there’s a good chance they’ll have to deal with some seriously ashy air.
Redoubt is a beaut. I first saw her (and her nearby siblings, Illiamna, Augustine and Douglas) while standing on my favorite beach in America, Bishop’s Beach. Yes, my favorite beach in America is in Homer, Alaska. It was the surprise factor of Bishop’s that made it my dream beach. It was late August and the water was warm enough for swimmers to venture in—all under the watchful eye of the glacier-covered mountains (er, volcanoes) across the way. Don’t get me wrong, Hawaii’s beaches are something stellar but Bishop’s is something unexpected.
How I would love to be back on that beach right now, watching Redoubt. (Of course, this being February, I would need to fortify myself with a serious coat, my Sorel boots, and a giant cookie from the nearby Two Sisters Bakery.)
But, since I’m not there today, I’ll have to keep on top of things via the Alaska Volcano Observatory’s Twitter updates and some local bloggers. Hell, I’ll follow these bloggers anyway cause they post some purty pictures of their beautiful town. Here, a few to follow:

(By the way, my apologies for planting that voice back in your head with Blow Baby Blow. I couldn’t help myself.)

We’re watching here, too. It’s a little closer, maybe if we lean north on our Seattle front porch, we’ll feel a little breeze?

OK, you put on your umbrella hat, too, please. No reason a good volcano watch should ruin your hairdo.

I am completely relying on your updates on Alaska to plan our future trip to the last frontier. Maybe now I’ll wait until the volcano blows.

Oh, thanks Jen! Stay tuned as, over the next month or two, I’ll post about the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod and other dog mushing events and will begin my own quest to make mushing the national sport of America.
