Buckingham Palace: Jazz Landmark?

So did you hear the one about Louis Armstrong and King George V? Satchmo shocked the court, in a 1932 gig at the royal residence, by offering His Majesty the following shout-out: “This one’s for you, Rex.” And that’s just one of several bizarre anecdotes in this story from the Telegraph, about the unlikely history of jazz at Buckingham Palace and its resulting nomination to a list of seminal U.K. jazz venues.

I’ve never had much urge to visit the palace when I’ve been in London, but suddenly I’m intrigued.

Dear Editor;
  Having just returned from an enjoyable ten day holiday in Spain, I am writing to share a tale of woe on my last day in Madrid.
  While seeking the car rental agency to return our rental, I made an illegal U-turn and was stopped, my car almost impounded and a 315 Euro fine levied to the ‘delight’ of ten police officers. Thankfully, the National Car rental agent came over to return my car.
  I did not have an International Driving Permit, an oversight that I regret deeply. I hope that your publication can get the word out to travellers abroad and all car rental agencies- that AAA does offers an international permit (application on-line) to avoid this dilemma.
  I will remember to apply for one before I rent a car abroad again.

Thank you,
Mr. Danny Steiner

They missed my favourite: late British trumpeter (and radio panel show host) Humphrey Lyttleton took his instrument to the VE Day celebrations at Buckingham Palace. You can hear him in the background of the BBC’s recording of the day. Apparently he was being wheeled around in a barrow…
