Occasionally on longer trips, the traveler is able to break free of an itinerary, leave the map behind and simply meander. For those prone to following a winding course, it’s interesting to note that the word “meander” springs from a waterway known to ancient Greeks as the Maeandros, and now called the Büyük (or big) Menderes. The river meanders through southwestern Turkey and empties into into the Aegean near the ruins of Miletus. En route, it fertilizes the rich Menderes valley, known for its figs, olive oil, bitter orange jelly, and vineyards in higher altitudes.
