We can’t let the day pass without noting the tragedy in Burma (Myanmar). According to some reports, as many as 10,000 22,500 100,000 people have died as a result of the cyclone that hit over the weekend. As if the Burmese people haven’t suffered enough already.

Such an unbelievable loss. Still trying to wrap my mind around the enormity of the situation on the ground - no drinking water and electricity.

There is so much horrible loss everywhere, everyday. I live in a country that feels free and today, I’m alive. Even when we don’t have a tragedy to remind us, it’s impossible to go a day without noting the futility of holding on to anything because one day, maybe in the next moment, we, ourselves will be gone too. I think of Burma and China and I hope to hold what is happening in my heart for as long as I live, as a reminder that all anyone ever has is the immediate moment. It very hard to describe whatever it is here in the U.S., the attitude, as if we’re all to live forever, to consume endlessly. Still…I’m more grateful than ever, to all of those who made it possible for us to live and breathe here in America, where it feels free and the buildings mostly stay put.
