‘Ernest Hemingway on Writing’

Terry McDonell, a Sports Illustrated editor who has played key roles at Outside and Men’s Journal, recently told Sports Business Journal: “I got a really interesting book called Ernest Hemingway on Writing. I’ve given about 100 of those away. I find that if you’re stuck on a story, you can just read around in there and find something that jump-starts you. So, it’s useful. I’m not sure what the magic is, but it seems to work for everybody that I give it to.” Library Journal described the 1984 title edited by Larry W. Phillips this way: “It’s not ‘how-to’ instructional advice but rather Ernesto’s impressions on writing and those who do it.” (Via Romenesko)

Hemingway was enthusiastic about his craft. The editor of this selection chose hundreds of quotes from Hemingway’s works that deal with writing. They are excellent choices.
