Groan-Inducing Headline of the Week: “The InciDENTAL Tourist”

It tops an interesting story in USA Today about, yes, dental tourism, also known as “tooth tourism.” Medical-related travel is nothing new, but apparently “tooth tourism” is the latest twist on the trend, especially in parts of Europe.

In the small city of Mosonmagyarovar, Hungary (just trying to pronounce the town’s name, we imagine, can cause serious oral injuries), there are now 150 dentists, many serving tooth tourists from neighboring countries where dental work can costs thousands of dollars more. It sounds like a lovely place. According to the story, “brass plaques and molar-shaped signs bearing easy-to-grasp names like ‘Eurodent’ and ‘Happy Dent’ line the streets along a central shopping district.”

You don’t need to travel all the way to Eastern Europe to find cheap dentistry.  There is a town across the border from Yuma, Arizona that is chock full of dentists.  They even have their own website…

But… If you can combine your stay with sightseeing why not? Kraków awaits tourists from Europe and America. It’s worth it.

My wife and I just returned from Gyor, Hungary where I had extensive dental work including 6 implants, 28 crowns, 2 bridges and 1 root canal. I was able to save 75% over the quote from my local dentist. The dentist was amazing and his facilities were very sterile and clean. The country is beautiful with excellent wines and cuisine. The prices are incredibly low in all kinds of stores and services. I would highly recommend them to family and friends. Thanks very much, Sam

Amazing.  I’m sure it pays for them to be there, but 150 seems a bit extreme :-)
