Harrison Ford: When Good Celebrity Travel Stories Go Bad

You can almost hear the swearing emanating from Outside magazine’s New Mexico offices when, after scoring an interview with action hero Harrison Ford about his travels, editors finally read the transcript. Ford makes almost no sense.

So what to do? Slap a big photo of him on the cover and publish his musings—non-sequiturs and all —titling it, with a wink and a nod, “The Thinker.”

Example:

When I go to work, I’m there to work. I’m not thinking about escaping; I’m thinking about investing. ... I love flying alone. ... I love maps.

Uh, okay.

Fortunately, the magazine makes up for it with a fantastic piece by David Vann on the mysterious death of a recreational sailor off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico. This piece reminds me of Outside in its heyday.

For better and worse, respectively, neither story is available online.
