Hiking the Belgian Plateau

“In the pantheon of walking, the conquering of the ‘Belgian Plateau’ merits few Brownie points,” Mark Rowe writes in The Independent. “Partly, this is because it is not very high, but mainly because almost no one knows it exists.” Rowe has a point: Belgium’s reputation was built on chocolate, beer and Tintin—not the great outdoors. That could be about to change.

Belgium opened its first national park just two years ago, and now that the man who made Hoge Kempen National Park a reality has been awarded a major environmental prize for his efforts, the place is starting to get some attention. In his article, Rowe gives the hiking in Hoge Kempen a glowing review—just one more reason Belgium should continue to exist?

Belgium, sigh… one of the Europe countries I wanted to visit since I was a little girl, why do you have so many chances to do things you wanted to? Are you a guide? Or a professional traveler?
