John le Carré and the Book That Might Have Been

imageFamed novelist—and former British spy—John le Carré offered an intriguing revelation this week: le Carré told the News Review that he’d been tempted, during his espionage career, to defect to the Soviet Union. “He says he was not attracted to communism,” the Times of London’s Maurice Chittenden writes. “He was just curious to find out what life was like behind the iron curtain in the 1960s.”

A defector-writer embedded in Soviet Russia? Treason aside, sounds like the makings of a fine travel book.
