My U-Turn Over Greenland

I was flying home to Los Angeles from Germany this week when, mid-way, the pilot made an announcement: We would be turning around and flying more than an hour back to Iceland to drop off a sick passenger. We weren’t told much about the elderly passenger; I saw him stand before he was led off the plane, which I took to be a good sign. In any case, it made for what I imagine to be a rare sight on the seat-back flight tracker:

Reminds me of landing at SeaTac from Honolulu with the flight tracker on and doing a 360 degree turn over the Everett area at 530 in the morning.  Lots of things rush through your mind - thankfully it was a straight shot after completing the 360.

And you got to go to Iceland!  Well, the runway at least.

And hopefully the ill passenger is doing much better.  And enjoying Iceland.

What’s the matter, they didn’t want to stop at the military landing base in Greenland?  That would have been even cooler to say you got to land in Greenland! But it is still pretty awesome that you got to make a U turn at Greenland!
