“When something goes wrong, a travel agent is your best source of help,” Ed Perkins writes. “You often have to rebook flights, accommodations and other arrangements. When you have advance notice, you could probably do your own rescheduling. But chances are an agent could do a quicker and better job than you could.”

Right. If you can find a travel agent. A TravelWeekly survey couple of days back at the Advantage conference in Spain showed up that 60% of agents want to quit the travel industry altogether.

The agents that are left MUST be very good to survive. A couple of agents who’ve I’ve spoken with recently regarding Mexico had some pretty good insights. For example, one noted that someone from the U.S. can get some of the best travel deals in Mexico over the Thanksgiving holiday. Few Americans like to leave the country at this time.

Also, it might be worth paying someone a few bucks to recommend a hotel etc. on which they are willing to stake their professional reputation. Unfortunately you can’t always go on price.
