Travel Essential: A Sense of Wonder

In his latest column, South Florida Sun-Sentinel travel editor Thomas Swick surveys the woes facing American travelers this summer and then offers a simple solution: “Go. Somewhere. Anywhere.” And take your sense of wonder. “For those who have it,” he writes, “a road trip to North Carolina is just as enjoyable as a vacation in Italy. For it involves the same fundamental gift: a journey out of the house, to another place, one with a different landscape, culture, way of doing things.”

I have really appreciated the articles you’ve pointed to lately by Thomas Swick. He has the kind of “Let’s make travel a priority” spirit that I have been sorely missing in recent times. A sense of Wonder is a powerful ingredient for making travel meaningful, and he frames it well in his writing. So much so that I have decided to buy one of his books. Thanks World Hum.

Great, Roger. I highly recommend his collection of stories, “A Way to See the World.” I spoke to him about it here:

P.S. Sorry about the run-on link. It’s a kink in the system we’re working on.

If the link doesn’t work for any reason, you can find the interview in our Q&A archives.

That was the book I decided to buy. Thanks Jim for the suggestion to read this interview—it was a worthy read. I really like Swick’s attitude and point of view.
