Reviewing “Road Reads” in the Washington Post

I like Jerry V. Haines’ perspective on travel writing. As he told me in a recent e-mail: “I subscribe to Bill Bryson’s definition of travel writing as ‘anything that gets you off the property.’” Haines contributes to the Washington Post’s “Road Reads” column, which features brief reviews of new travel books. His broad perspective was evident Sunday, when he reviewed “Celebrating Women,” a coffee table book about women around the world. Haines praises the book, writing that the photojournalist/author “makes a decidedly un-preachy case for the power of women and girls.” But Haines doesn’t pull any punches, either: “Glossy paper and an assertively modern typeface sometimes make the text difficult to read, and that’s a crime.” The column usually appears the second and fourth Sundays of each month.
