Sure Sign of Spring: Road Trips

Ah, early spring. Flowers have started to poke their heads out of the ground. Birds seem that much cheerier and chirpier. And, of course, dreamers across America are plotting the perfect road trip in their minds and Moleskine notebooks. (Come on, admit it—we’re all Moleskine cliches.)

A few interesting road trips of note: Tom Brokaw is set to hit the road soon to explore this whole economy thing. Phil Keoghan is already out there. And this guy plans to inline skate his way across the U.S. in four weeks or less! (On a side note, who knew there was a social networking site just for inline skaters?)

That’s enough about them. You hitting the road soon?

I’m hitting the road soon, but here’s an easier way for YOU to do it!!  Head over today and enter our Spring Road Trip Playlist contest.  It’s easy to enter and win, but hurry - you have to enter by April 8th to qualify!

Yes…...Another road trip season is here!  I leave next week heading from Chicago, down to Charleston SC.  My first 1000 mile trip of the season.  It’s been another brutal winter here, and I’m looking forward to a little low country warmth.. And of course I’ll have my road trip moleskine handy….happy trails!

I am honored to find mention here with my projects. Skating across the continent changed my life in ways that I find hard to express in words. I wish and encourage as many people as possible to attempt the journey. We have an amazing country, and, we should all see and be proud of it. Beaches, mountains, deserts, forests, plains provided for a breath taking backdrop to learn more about not only this great land, but, about myself also.

I will be skating from Dallas to Austin to set a new record on April 17th. It will be 160-200 miles. I can’t wait to skate!

Yes we are hitting the road across US for the first time next May. Heading from Miami, florida, north west to Oregon. We are very exited with the idea of this journey.  Any tips

I’m on the road right now!

I got the bug 10 years ago with my first cross the USA,  a 16,811 mile, 3 month road trip when I was 16. That’s why happened when they gave me my drivers license!

Road tripin’ is so much fun. Now I travel with a caravan of critters….. 3 dogs, 2 horses and a goldfish!

OK, my road trip bug had already been tripped a bit but you’ve all kicked it into high gear. I’d love it if you all checked in as you wander about. Maybe it could even lead to some fun future blog posts about what you’ve each encountered along the way. Sound good? If you’re up for it, feel free to post here, drop me a note at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), or, if you’re Twitter-inclined (and Danny—after you followed me out there, the idea for this road trip piece finally really kicked off), I’m at @jennaschnuer.com. Such a great mix you all are—first-timers (enjoy Maru and Omar—where are you both from?) to Lindsey the road trip warrior. Fantastic.

My only road trip downfall: as a NYer, I don’t own a car. The cheap rental research has begun!

And happy notebook writing Ted! (Ted Clyde—great name—you’re straight out of a western flick with that one.)

Oh yeah. We’re doing a short Oregon road trip soon—out around Mt. Hood and down the Willamette Valley. Flowering trees, cafes in small towns, the camera, maybe, weather gods willing, we’ll open the sun roof on the car. I. Can’t. Wait.

I’ll be road tripping in New Mexico this coming week. Green chiles, here I come!

Jenna Schnuer 04.05.09 | 3:27 PM ET

Chile well Sophie! I look forward to your reports from the road and a gift box filled with all sorts of swell stuff. (A girl can dream.)

Maybe something from the NM Museum of Space History…?

Jenna Schnuer 04.05.09 | 3:39 PM ET

Maybe a pen. I’m interviewing Buzz Aldrin next week so could use it to take notes. ;-)

Just finished a great road trip in southern Utah. Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Capital Reef, Canyonlands, and Arches in a week. My second time there in 6 months (i’m from Alberta, Canada), the scenery there is unbelievable with the bonus of open roads and no traffic :)
This past September I drove from Edmonton, Alberta to L.A. along the coastine (Big Sur, WOW!) enjoying the amazing scenery.
I hope you appreciate how beautiful your country truly is, can’t wait to go back south again. Suggestions are very welcome!

Sophia Dembling 04.09.09 | 10:11 AM ET

I absolutely appreciate it, Jeff. When I first started traveling, I vowed not to travel outside the U.S. until I had visited 50 states. I didn’t quite manage that, but got close.

Driving coast-to-coast is great way to get a sense of the scale and variety of the U.S. New England also is wonderful, and so different from the west. And, of course, you’ve only started exploring the Southwest. Grand Canyon really is grand (I suggest the North Rim.) And Monument Valley is one of my favorite places in the world.

Danny Dannels 04.09.09 | 12:49 PM ET

I’ve seen 43 of the 50 states. They are all amazing. I’ve even been up to the Northland. Canada is beautiful in the summer. My wife and I spent 2006 traveling back and forth to races all over the country by car. We’d pack an ice chest an live out of the vehicle as we toured. Special places for us included Yellowstone, Niagra Falls, and, Pensacola Beach. Going down to Cozumel, Mexico was a blast, but, I’s stay away from the border states until it settles down.

From all of the travels that I have been blessed to go on, I have learned a valuable lesson. Everywhere you go, you run into people just like you, doing exactly what you do. They just do it somewhere else. We are all a single people upon this world. Different languages and faces should not imply a difference in the people. We should in fact embrace those differences, and, appreciate that we have each other. We are all that we have.

BTW, I like the old school Reporters Notebook that fits in my back pocket and is easy to hold in the palm of one hand. Every time I try carrying something bigger, I regret it.

Got your pen, Jenna. You’re gonna love it.
