Speaking of the excesses and absurdities in cruising, USA Today has published a series of reader photos of cruise towel creatures—probably best appreciated after a few Slippery Nipples or Fuzzy Navels with Cocopuff or Mojo Mike.

Jim, you’re heartless!

The audience isn’t fuzzy navel drinkers. It’s families—i.e. kids.

On our first family cruise, my then 4-year-old was so entraced by the cotton origami that we had to beg the steward not to take them away each morning.

By the end of the week, our cabin had been taken over by a menagerie of short-nap critters.

Carnival even publishes how-to books. Could make great Christmas presents for the World Hum staff ...

Ha! Good point, Larry.

I think there’s something about the idea of cabin attendants who are generally paid very low wages—people who may not even have hot water at home—laboring over these creations that gives me pause.

That said, I’m sure my 2-year-old daughter would get a big kick out of the “cotton origami,” too. Especially if there are hippos or penguins involved.

I smell a “National Cruise Bath Towel Creation” competition in the future. May already exist. Who knows.

And boy would it be competitive!
