How was it? “I looked like a contented man,” he writes in Sunday’s South Florida Sun-Sentinel, “but inside I was raging.”

The 798 from SLO to SIM has always been on time except this time when I had my wife with me.  Some one turned left onto the tracks with his car and then jambed it there in SBA.  Two hours delay.  We travelers asked for the driver but were refused.  Our conductor told us why we stopped before stopping, explained why, denied us the driver, explained track inspection.  He apologised for our dely several times.  Did you know meals are included with sleeping rooms on AMTRAK?  TAH

Long distance train travel in the States is a great way to go if you have a lot of time.  If you can afford it a roomette or bedroom on Amtrak is great; it makes you feel like you are one of those old time robber barrons riding in your own private Pullman car!  The bar/lounge or cafe/observation car
(if your train has one) is a great place to meet different people.  Long distance coach travel can be vexing depending on your fellow travelers.  If you like peace and quiet and being able to think and reflect the private room is better for you.  You can always make a trip to the bar for a change of pace or socializing.  I am a railfan/railroader and for me getting there is great;I just love looking out at America flashby.

Train travel is unfortunately going out of style. This need for instant gratification generation that is dominating the US is destroying our history. I remember when the train ride was half of the vacation.
