Born and raised on the Big Island of Hawai’i and being part Hawaiian, I grew up listening to Israel Kamakawio’ole when he started of with the Makaha Sons of Niihau. He sings so many great songs and when he sings it’s from his heart. He is truly missed, but his music will always live on for future generation to hear and enjoy.

The first time I heard this song was in a Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away etc) animation called “mimi o sumaseba”, or in english “Whisper of the heart”. I had to look the song up after the movie, and found that it was originally sung by John Denver (great version btw). The story behind the song’s creation is fascinating, you should check out the wikipedia entry! I also listened to Olivia Newton John’s version on Youtube, which was good in its own way. And now your blog post has alerted me to this one. Thanks very much.
