Travel in Mexico Getting More Expensive, Too

More bad news for American travelers. The dollar has lost 10 percent of its value against the peso since the beginning of the year, making Mexico trips too costly for some. USA Today reports on the fallout. One bit of good Mexico news for the pocketbook: As we noted recently, it’s still not a bad place to fill up your gas tank.

I’m rarely shocked by high prices in tourist resorts, but in Cabo this spring I paid $15 USD for a small tube of sunblock. And this was at a grocery store, not the hotel gift shop. The locals call it “Caro San Lucas” (caro is Spanish for expensive) and I can see why.

I think when it comes to flights.. all of them have gone up. When it comes to tourist spots in Mexico the expectation is that foreigners will pay top dollar. The key is to go to a REALLY nice place that is not a big name like Cancun, Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas, etc. Trust me!

I have just returned from Mexico and found food and accomodation surprisingly expensive.
However, I got a good deal at an excellent spanish language school (including homestay) which decreased the cost…
