U.S. Customs to Amy Winehouse: No, No, No*

Troubled British singer Amy Winehouse has been denied an American visa for this weekend’s Grammy Awards, reports the CBC. Winehouse, who is two weeks into her latest rehab stint, will be up for six awards at Sunday’s ceremony, including Album of the Year—but for this year at least, she won’t go, go, go.

*Update, Monday, Feb. 11: Winehouse got last-minute approval to travel to the U.S. but performed live via satellite from London—at 3:41 a.m. local time. Here’s video:

Hi Eva:

I always wondered why the Grammys dump all their awards on one person, rather than spread it around a little. I guess it’s a little like smelling Oscar: “Winner or Six Academy Awards” . . . in the deep-throated narrative voice (resembling Warren Oats playing the Cyclops in the original “Outer Limits,”) and etcetera in the trailers. Anyway, I feel out of it, since I’ve never even heard of Amy Winehouse. It sounds like she’s the U.K.‘s answer to Beyoncé. Rock on.

Such a talented woman. It is a shame she is having so many problems. It is a further shame that she is being denied the opportunity of this POSITIVE experience. Just the type of experience that could make a real difference in her sobriety. To experience such a thrill w/o any added chemicals… Just a shame that self-abusers are so often denied the opportunity at the positive experiences that could illustrate the highs possible on our own natural endorphins.

How many stupid, no life copy cat girls will runout and try to become Amy?

John - It’s not that they dump all the awards on one person or song. It is that there are the nominations, then the voting. When voting for each catagory the voters do not know if the selection they are voting for won any other catagories or not. They are voting their honest opinion. There is no control over whether an entrant wins none, one, or umpteen. It is the only fair way to do it. If one said well this song/person is nominated for other awards so I better not vote for this just incase they win too many, the whole idea of voting for what one thinks most deserves the award would be nix. Besides, Amy has a voice!
