I’ve been enjoying my Zapatista rebel Christmas tree ornament—I think it was originally supposed to be a key chain—which I brought back from a trip to Chiapas years ago. When my 3-year-old daughter asked about it, I was more than happy to launch into a discussion about subcomandante Marcos and agrarian reform movements. She shrugged. Yes, another teachable moment brought to us by travel.

I just started reading Arctic Dreams by Barry Lopez, and I’m loving it so far. Of course, I haven’t (yet) been as far north as the places Lopez writes about, but even here in the sub-Arctic I can appreciate a phrase like “the sometimes extravagant light of a July day.”

This news from Japan was the highlight of my week so far.

I loved this story about Kyrgyzstan trying to attract adventure tourists.

Driving through the snowy landscapes of Maryland and Pennsylvania while listening to music well suited for snowy landscapes, namely Sigur Ros.

I love the conversations sparked by travel Christmas ornaments. My tree is decked out with some sort of memento from every city/country I’ve traveled to.

I think the most notable travel story of the week is the one about TSA agents serving subpoenas to travel bloggers Chris Elliott and Steven Frischling, demanding they reveal their sources for the recent TSA airline security directive that had been sent to thousands of airports and airlines around the world after the failed Christmas Day bombing. I first noticed the story yesterday on Chris Gray Faust’s blog, Chris Around the World, and I’m happy to see that plenty of media outlets (the AP, UPI, Wired, Huffington Post, the New York Times, USA Today, MSNBC, BoingBoing, Gadling, etc) have now picked up the story as well.
Wired has the most comprehensive account:

Good news! The TSA withdrew its subpoenas:

I enjoy browsing your site, viewing the videos and reading the comments. Here is something to think about . . . I strongly disagree with noted travel writer Paul Theroux that photography and the Internet “have destroyed the pleasure of discovery in travel.” Dark Star Safari, p.11. In my opinion these media prepare the traveler for an enhanced travel experience. To prove my point visit my web site at:

What’s you opinion?
