Matt Gross’ story about eating his way through Tokyo’s “sprawling ramen ecosystem.” Made me long for a bowl of noodles—and another trip to Japan.

The Canadian Rockies. Some friends and I stayed at the stunning Emerald Lake Lodge in eastern B.C. for a dear friend’s wedding. Approaching the Rockies from the high plains of the East, seeing them absolutely explode out of the Continental Divide, was extraordinary. We squeezed a lot into four days in Canada: ice hockey (I watched), cross-country skiing, many sing-alongs and not a small amount of whisky. Tons o’fun.

Cracking open “Point Omega,” Don DeLillo’s new novella, on a cross-country flight yesterday. I don’t think it’s his most compelling work. Nevertheless, flying and reading DeLillo are two of my favorite things. (As we’ve pointed out before, the phrase “World Hum” came from a DeLillo novel.)

Last night my aunt and I were rummaging through some old boxes and discovered a treasure trove of old travel films shot by my grandfather, a parasitologist, on various research expeditions and journeys. Some of the postmarks date as far back as the mid-30’s and he labeled each one—Samoa, Alaska, Niagara….I’m looking forward to discovering what he filmed!

I went snowshoeing on an old skidoo trail at a lake just outside Whitehorse this weekend, and I loved getting above the treeline for some big views of the area.
