What We Loved This Week: Portland, ‘This American Life’ and Coming Home Again

I loved arriving back in Whitehorse after three and a half weeks on the road. I don’t think it takes anything away from a great trip to admit that coming home—putting security pat-downs, early morning departures and bad take-out sandwiches behind you for awhile—can be a relief, and even one of the pleasures of going away in the first place.

I’ve been loving Portland, where I’m spending a few days. Yesterday I drove east into the Columbia River Gorge area and stopped off the road at Multnomah Falls. Here’s a phone pic.

I loved This American Life’s episode The Bridge, which featured several stories that take place on bridges or in tunnels. I particularly loved the story about Chen Sah, who spends his weekends on China’s Naan-jing Chin bridge, trying to single handedly stop jumpers.

I’ve been getting these flashbacks, looking at/reading just a little of the coverage of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. I was part of a months-long three-person rotation that managed the interagency news office during 1979’s Ixtoc 1 blowout in Campeche Bay—much more oil, but much shallower water to work in at the site. These new coverage maps (linked from World Hum) are interesting, and perhaps a little scary. But we can’t forget that this ends up being a three dimensional problem, with toxic materials distributed through the water column, attached to suspended solids, etc. The final impact on nature, lives, and livelihoods: Still to be determined.

Ah! I just missed you at Multnomah, Jim. I was there on Monday. Did you walk to the top?
