I’m in awe of Brel. Who can even afford fresh squeezed room service orange juice? Trader Joe’s must pay really well, or this dude has boldly made juice a life priority.

The New Putumayo South Africa CD, which has some fantastic stuff from the Soul Brothers, Bholoja, Kaya and others. A great World Cup 2010 soundtrack.

I’m in Paris, and in mad pursuit of Hemingway geekdom, I gorged on flesh at Brasserie Lipp followed by dessert decadence at Le Comptoir des St. Peres. It’s throne is a shrine. According to mythology, the toilet is where F. Scott Fitzgerald exposed his, er, body of work, to Hemingway and asked him to size it up for him. “People ask, ‘Do you mind if I have a look at your toilet?’” the waiter says. “I say, ‘Please, be my guest. Enjoy yourself.’” (You can follow my Hemingway quest at Papa’s Planet.)

I loved this interview in the New York Times with a neuroscientist studying music and the brain. It doesn’t touch on the topic in any detail, but it reminded me that listening to Spanish-language music has helped improve my Spanish skills—a useful technique, I would think, for any traveler looking to get more comfortable with a foreign language.

Last weekend I headed down to Haines, Alaska for Beerfest—an all-you-can-drink fiesta starring craft breweries from around the state. A sunny afternoon of top-quality beer and tasty fish tacos, followed up with an icy dip in the Pacific, all with a mountain view? It doesn’t get much better.

David that’s awesome your following Hemingway’s many places- you are not the only one! A friend and I went driving around on a Saturday night looking for the remaining brothel buildings in Billings Montana because of a passage of his writing that refers to him working at one. Have a blast in Paris!
